Plaza Cleaners in Downey, California was apparently the setting of arson in April 2007. The fire burned the cleaning business to the point where it was charred and unusable. Businesses adjacent to Plaza Cleaners - Caf -n Stuff and California Affordable Insurance - were also damaged by the fire and have only recently reopened. After the fire, asbestos was found in all three businesses. Asbestos Abatement Can Be an Expensive and Lengthy Process
Assessment of the asbestos and the removal (asbestos abatement) had to be performed before the renovations of Caf -n Stuff and California Affordable Insurance could be started. The owners of both of these businesses had originally expected to be closed for just a few weeks rather than six months.
Gina and Giovanni Cabrera Cabrera, owners of California Affordable Insurance, noted that the firefighters caused as much damage as the Plaza Cleaners fire itself did, since they had to break down their door and poke holes in the ceiling and walls to get the fire out. Obliged to Conduct Business Remotely
The Cabreras understood the need for the firefighters to do that, but they were also obliged to conduct their business from remote locations when asbestos was found in the ceiling at their business premises. Family member Robert Cabrera explained, -This was like a bad, bad dream.- The losses to California Affordable Insurance were about $65-$75,000.
Caf -n Stuff suffered extensive smoke damage, and the fire burned down its canopy. Owner Ebie Ghaneian said that they too had to use remote locations for months to provide their catering services, describing it as -a lot of inconvenience.- About $120,000 was needed to restore the business; Ghaneian said that they had to take care of the asbestos, repair the ceiling and floors, and get all new furniture.
Plaza Cleaners remains closed and the Downey police have not released names of any suspects in the arson.
